Before Toto was formed The members of the band played sessions for other musicians. David Paich, the son of drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggs’ 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 following the collaboration.
Turn Back, Toto's third studio album, was criticized by critics for not having hit singles. In 1985, singer Fergie Frederiksen resigned from the group, and the band held auditions for the new frontman. The band chose guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in the year 1986.
In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by re-discovering old tapes and demos to release a special album called Toto XX. The album was well-received by fans, and the band embarked upon an extensive tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.
Shem von Schröck took over Leland Sklar as the drummer during the tour in support of the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live set titled Falling in Between, which included recordings from the tour and an interview with Toto.
